Introduction to The Pit and Bulletin Board Systems

The Pit is an old Door Game from the era of Bulletin Board Systems (BBS). For those that don't know, a BBS was what we had before everything was dot com. You called in to a BBS with a dial-up modem, and used a very basic interface to navigate message boards, games (doors), talk to other users, etc. Modems were very slow in comparison to modern speeds. Dial up modems today top out at 56K bps (56000), and broadband modems run at speeds up to 8M bps (8000000). Dial up modems during the BBS times ranged from 300 bps to 28.8K bps. The connection speed limited what you could do with games then. Games were made with minimal graphics, or no graphics at all, using only text. The Pit was a common Door on BBSs around 1990.

The Pit used text based graphics and a simple interface. Players and enemies are represented as a single text character (Eg; , , and others) and move around a small grid. You use the number keys to move and to aim your attacks. The enemies include slaves, rogues, sorcerors, dragons, demons, various mythological creatures, even Norse Gods.

The object of the game is simply to be the last one standing. To help you accomplish this, you can obtain many items along the way. Your primary arsenal consists of a hand weapon, a range weapon, and armor. You can also acquire magical items that can either help you or hurt you. There are shops that sell all types of items. The weapon and armor dealers have a fixed stock. Nothing new ever shows up here. The magic shop's selection will change as you progress through the game. You can also claim items from slain enemies. After defeating a foe, if they had any items you are capable of using, you are given the option to trade equipment (if the item is equal to or better than what you currently have), or to take a magic item if you don't already have that item.

Fighting enemies in The Arena is the primary aspect of this game. You select the class of your opponent and fight them to the death. Select your opponent based on your present strength. Trainees and warriors are the best starting place. Some of your foes have weapons that will poison you, blind you, even drain levels. Be sure you can handle the class of enemy before you decide to try taking them on.

You can also fight other people from the BBS. Anyone who logs into the game is a potential target. Upon defeating a player, you will have the option to take their equipment and any magic items they have, and you will be awarded all the gold they had on hand. Players are informed who they were killed by when the log in, so they could always come back for you.

Main Game Screen

The main menu of the game is laid out in a simple fashion. You simply press the respective key for the selection you want. Here are the selections with a summary of each:

Weapon/Armor Shop: You can buy or sell hand weapons, range weapons, and armor here. You can also purchase projectiles for your range weapons. When buying or selling an item, you are given the choice of haggling the price. Sometimes the shopkeeper will get annoyed with your bartering and kick you out. If that happens, just try again. He will drop the price just once for a ten percent discount. The same applies to selling your weapon/armor. See the shops section for what's available from the Weapon/Armor Shop.

Visit Healer: Here you can heal your hit points as well as status ailments. You can also purchase a Healing Elixir. Prices here increase based on your current level. Pricing is as follows:

          Health 1 gold/level
          Cure Poison 5 gold/level
          Cure Disease 5 gold/level
          Cure Blindness 5 gold/level
          Healing Elixir 1000 gold/level

Prices are increased with your level. Multiply the price by
your current level to get the present cost.

Tavern: There's really only one important thing to the tavern. Drinks. See the hints section for details on why drinking is important.

Magic Shop: This is where you buy or sell magic items. You can also have items identified for 10% of the retail price of the item. You are not able to haggle the price when buying an item. What you see is it, no bargaining. You can, however, bargain with what you sell it for, as well as how much it costs to identify the item. Whether selling or identifying, the shopkeeper never gets annoyed with you haggling. Haggling is slightly different in the magic shop. You can get as many as 3 increases in selling price for some items, and decrease the cost to identify an item up to 3 times as well. It might take a few tries, but again, you can haggle forever. See the Magic Items section for item details.

Arena (The Pit): The Main Event. Enter The Pit, choose what type of opponent you want, and the battle begins. When you win a battle here, you are given the option to claim your opponents gear (if equipable), and are awarded gold and some score. Your level is based on your score. If you die in the pit, you are taken out of the game and back to the doors menu. You are given 3 chances per day to play by default, but your sysop may have that set different. Upon reentering the game after dying, you will need to heal youself. You are given 1/4 of your max health after you die. See Enemies section for more about the opponents you'll face here.

Gambling Hall: Various casino games are here for your amusement. And bankruptcy. This area is really just a place to waste your time and money. Any prizes worth winning don't come up nearly often enough to make this worthwhile. Only come here if your gambling support group cancelled tonight's meeting and you really need a fix.

Challenge/View contestant: This is where you go if you want to kill another BBS user. You can check out a player's equipment for a small fee before you jump into battle with them blindly. You win all your opponents items and can trade equipment with them if you win. Player fights are usually limited to one per day.

Log of Battles: Displays a list of your player kills and your defeats.

Suicide (Kill Self): Resets your character. As in no weapons, no armor, no score, and 100 gold.

Multiline Chat/Combat: Not available until The Pit V4.0, which no one uses. Any BBS I have used has The Pit V3.6, which is the version this guide is written for/from. This appears on the menu, but is unusable.

Put Gold in Bank: Put your blood money here for safekeeping. If it's in the bank, you will never lose it.

Take Gold from Bank: Withdraw some or all of your money.

Change Options: Allows you to change a few settings you previously entered.

Instructions: How to play the game.

Redraw Screen: Refreshes the screen. Not really important since you shouldn't be getting the errors this was put here to correct.

Enemy Classes

Trainees: This is the first group you want to go for. Enemies here are very weak, and they have your first equipment upgrades. Nothing to really think about here. Just knock off enough to gain 3 or 4 levels.

Warriors: Step two. These guys are just like the Trainees, only a little stronger. Better equipment here, too.

Veterans: I wouldn't advise trying these guys out before you are at least level 7, and even then, they're still tough. Expect to die a few times here.

Elven Warriors: First off, there's always at least 3 of these guys. They're quick, and they usually have weapons with bonuses. Not worth the hassle, but if you want to try them out, I'd wait until level 20 or so.

Heroes: More human warriors, just higher levels and better gear. Start on these guys around level 12-14. Watch the weapons they have. Some of these guys carry weapons with extra effects, none of which you want to be on the business end of. See the Weapons section for details.

Sorcerors: Powerful wizards here. Don't fight these guys unless you have more than a couple hundred hit points. Some of them have VERY powerful range attacks that can do 160 points damage to a level 200 character. Others have hand weapons with added effects. Most of them have low hit points, but that does not make them easy. Sorcerors carry magic items, which are yours to keep if you don't already have them. Most Sorcerors carry 2-3 items each. If you don't really care about magic items, don't bother with these guys.

Humanoid Monsters: Mostly weak, low level monsters. None of these guys should pose any real problems once you reach level 10. Medusa will drop an item every time you beat her. It's always the same item, so sell it every time you get it. It's worth a few thousand gold, which is very helpful early in the game.

Creatures: Dragons, Bugbears, Owlbears, that sort. Decent gold, good for gaining levels once you reach level 26. Some of the monsters here do some serious damage. Be careful here. Watch out for the Fang Dragon.

Undead Monsters: Mummies and such. Some easy, some hard, all pointless.

Random Encounters: Enemies of all shapes and sizes. Not a good idea to play with them until about level 40. Most of the creatures here have added effect weapons. The two best weapons in the game, the Sword of Ancients and the Bow of Ancients can be found here. The best armor, Daelnar's Ring, can also be found here.

Elementals: Elemental creatures. Not an easy kill. These guys will prove a challenge even at level 115. Keep your distance with most of these guys. Beware the Devas. Stay away from the Sun Deva. Beware the Moon Deva's range weapon.

Norse Gods: Send a Norse God to Valhalla here. Or die trying. If you're not at level 250 when you face of of them, and you'll most likely be killed. They're called gods for a good reason.

Hints

Learn your enemies. Many of the foes you'll face have either a good hand weapon or a good range weapon, not both. If you know whether to fight close or far, you can save yourself a lot of danger and trips to the healer.

Do not stay in one place too long.

As your level increases, the game adjusts your opponents accordingly. You'll know it's time to move to a stronger class of enemy when you fight multiple opponents. Depending on your level, you can fight a LOT of enemies at once. I've seen 23 veterans in one fight. 14 Sorcerors in another. This is especially important to know if you end up fighting a dozen of the same guy who wields a level draining weapon. I lost 130 levels in a single fight getting cornered by 13 guys with Soul Keepers.

The Sun Deva and Moon Deva both drain levels. The Moon Deva is especially dangerous because its RANGE weapon is level draining. If you fight it, run.

Heal after every fight.

Sell any items with negative or no effect. Even if it isnt worth much, it's money you didn't have before. You can't have two of any item, so you may end up missing out on items if you don't sell them.

At some point in the game, every hand weapon you can get has an added effect. Pay attention to what your weapon has. Giant and Dragon Slaying aren't very useful unless your fighting giants or dragons. Norse Gods are immune to paralysis. Level Drain is only useful for other BBS users. Vorpal weapons give you an occasional hit that causes massive damage (80 to several hundred). Another thing to remember is that these weapons hit less frequently.

Range weapons aren't always easy to choose between. With bows, the damage isn't the only deciding factor. A bow with a good range can make up for being a little weaker. Sometimes, the only way to survive a battle is by staying outside of your opponents range.

And finally, the Tavern...

While drinking in the tavern, you will occasionally get one of several random events. The events are as follows:

A hobbit begins cutting the string on your gold pouch... (Gold)
An elf grabs your bow... (Bow)
A brawl breaks out... (Hand Weapon)

When these events occur, a meter with a target area begins filling up. You must hit the (Enter) key on or within one space of the target, otherwise you lose the associated item.

An old man appears sometimes asking you if you want to buy a random weapon or armor. These items are the same as the weapon and armor dealers selection, but they always have a (+x) bonus. The prices are generally VERY good, like a +5 Great Sword for roughly 4000 gold. It says the old man "claims" it's whatever it says, but it will always be real. There's no risks involved. Here's the best part: You can sell these items for a HUGE profit. A +5 weapon is usually worth 20000 gold or better. This is also a good way to get good weapons at lower levels.

There's a shady looking guy who will motion for you to follow him, then the game will ask if you want to. If you say yes, you will be blindfolded and led into an empty warehouse. Here' they will ask you if you want to assassinate another player. There are four levels of assassin:

       Acolyte Assassin 100 gold
       Assassin 1000 gold
       Master Assassin 10000 gold
       Supreme Assassin 100000 gold

Should you decide to hire an assassin, it will be waiting for the player next time they log on. You can only send one assassin per visit to the warehouse, but you can send loads of them. I've sent as many as 20 assassins before the player logged in again.

The last event that can occur while drinking is drinking too much. When you spend 30 gold on alcohol, you will get the final event. The prices are:

           Beer 1 gold
           Ale 2 gold
           Wine 5 gold
           Devil's Brew 10 gold

When you have drank 30 gold worth of alcohol, you pass out. When you wake up, all of your equipment and any gold on hand is gone. As you drink, you will receive a few messages letting you know how far along you are.

"That hit the spot!" (1 gold)
"You're feeling good now!" (5 gold)
"The room is spinning!" (10 gold)
        "You're getting sick" (20 gold)

To avoid losing all your stuff, simply leave the tavern once it says you're getting sick, and reenter. The count starts over when you leave, so you could have all +5 equipment with only about 15-20 minutes of time spent in the bar.

FAQ (Sort Of)

I call this section FAQ (Sort Of) because I haven't been asked any questions about this game yet. I'm including information here that is important, but not in any of the previous sections.

****Questions not related to the game****

Q - So what's a BBS again?
A - A BBS was what people with computers and modems called into before
the internet became so popular. You called into a local computer,
and used whatever features the sysop installed. Most BBSs could
only handle a few callers at a time. Because of this, you were
limited on how much time you could spend on them. Typically, you
had 30-60 minutes. This was usually plenty, since you were limited
on how much you could play the games.

Q - What the hell is a sysop?
A - System Operator. The sysop is the person who owns and maintains the
BBS. They have the ability to limit your account on their BBS, so
it isn't wise to upset them if you want to stay on their system.

Q - When were BBSs popular? I've never heard of them.
A - I was on BBSs from 1988 until 1994. I don't know exactly when they
became popular, but in 1988, some people still used 300 bps modems,
so I don't think it started too long before that.

Q - If it's so old, why are people still running BBSs?
A - Nostalgia. Remembering your roots. Not caring about "keeping
up with the times". If the world wide web was a major city, a BBS
would be a small town. Sometimes it's nice to take it easy.

****Questions related to the game****

Q - Can I regain levels I lost from a level draining attack?
A - Yes and No. The 'Ritgoan' Scroll will restore levels if it's used
in the battle you lost the levels in. Once a battle ends, any
levels you have lost are gone. The only way to get them again is
to fight enough to reach the level again.

Q - I beat an enemy, but I wasn't given the option to take his
    equipment. Why?
A - Two possibilities. If it's an item you can wear, it's probably not
as strong as your current item. The game will not offer you a
weaker piece of equipment in trade. The other reason is a lot of
enemies have equipment you simply can not use.

Q - Ok, I got offered an item that wasn't as powerful as what I have.
Didn't you just say the game won't offer weaker items?
A - Yeah, I did. But the weapons get a little more complicated as you
get to the better ones. You might want to have a different added
effect on your weapon, so it's not always bad to step down a bit.

Q - What does 2d6 damage mean?
A - 2 dice, 6 sides. The damage you inflict on your opponent is based
on a randomly generated number. The reference here is the
traditional Dungeons & Dragons dice. 2d6 means the damage will be
selected from a number you could roll with 2 standard dice (6 sided
    cubes). 1d7 means a damage range of 1-7. 6d6 means a range of 6-36.

Q - How does the +3 on my weapon affect it?
A - Plus factors add both strength and value to your weapons and armor.
For example, a Great Sword has a damage factor of 1d12. A +5 Great
Sword has a damage factor of 1d12+5. The +5 changes the damage
range from 1-12hp to 6-17hp. It also changes the value from 1000
    gold to 110000 gold.

Q - I'm blinded and I can't see the exit to escape. What do I do?
A - The Potion Dark Grey Liquid will cure blindness. Buying the
Crystal Lens will prevent it. If you don't have either, you can
just pass your turn (press 5) until you die, or you can run for the
walls and keep walking into them until you find the exit.

Q - Why does it say "There was no visible effect" when I use (Item)?
A - Some items don't require you to use them in order for them to work.
Others don't tell you what they've done. Refer to the magic item
section for the effects of the items.

Q - Why don't you have prices for the items listed?
A - I didn't write down the prices. It doesn't really matter that I
didn't include them. You'd only need them for buying or selling,
and either way, it has the prices right there.

Q - Why aren't the enemies listed individually?
A - There's too many of them. Also, I dont have the stats for them.

Q - Why is this guide mostly lists?
A - It's a guide, not a walkthrough.

Q - Can I contact you for (reason)?
A - Sure. Read the contact section first.
